Interior Design and Your Carpets

Poul Henningsens PH-Lampe von 1925Image via Wikipedia

Floor in a particular space is a very important thing. It says a lot about how functional and clean is this room. So, what we can do to make the space beautiful, worth living in and elegant?

Most of us don't pay so much attention in what trend the room was designed. Usually our first look goes to the floor. It is not a very strange thing cause we are taking our shoes of and the floor catches our attention.

In many places, especially hotels, campuses and public places the choice goes to carpet. We usually also choose the carpet to our homes. That is why it seems that choosing the right color and design of the carpet might be so important.

Carpet installation is not always an easy task. We have to measure the room, make sure that it won't be a problem for door opening and also be sure that it will match the room with all the important elements.

One of the elements that we have to consider (and mostly forget about) is room humidity. If the floor seems to be a bit too wet it might be a big problem cause the carpet won't stick to the floor. Next element might be the temperature that is in the room when we install the carpet.

Deciding on the carpet in our homes we should also carefully choose the company that would make the installation - from the tools and their experience might depend the look of your floor for many next years.

If we can't make a good decision of choosing the carpet and company we can decide on having rugs, door mats and other small mats. We can match the color of them and with our home design. We also spend less money and make a bigger change in the rooms.

Rugs and bathroom mats to choose.

Bath Accessories – A Study In Black And White

dual-head showerImage by drcorneilus via Flickr

Bath accessories can make a big change in any bathroom. Simply replacing old bath accessories with new ones can often make it look as though the entire bath has been redecorated.

Black and white bath accessories are an example of those that bring the greatest change to a bathroom. A study in just black and white, from floor to ceiling, is one way of using these two colors. Or try a study in black and white bath accessories with one other color as a backdrop.

Black and white bath accessories with red walls can produce a very dramatic look, no matter how large or small your bath is. Choose a warm red wall paper for a cozy, comforting look. Or use a deep, warm red paint on your walls. Then accent the red with black and white bath accessories.

Asian red is a good choice with black and white bath accessories. Picture a Chinese restaurant with imperial red walls and carpeting, pristine white tablecloths, and black lacquer furniture. You can use your black and white bath accessories to achieve the same look in your bath. Paint the walls with imperial red and use a similar or darker red on the floor, either in tiles or carpeting. Black toilet seat, tub, and vanity will look solid. Add white towels and smaller accessories. A shower curtain of white with palm or bamboo trees in black silhouette could add pattern without color. A black fern leaf design is also an option.

The Asian theme could be carried further with Croscill's black and white bath accessories. Each has a black calligraphy letter on white, with words such as peace, prosperity, harmony, and happiness.

Black and White Bath Accessories to Use

Before you begin accessorizing your bath, you may want to find pictures of baths done in black and white. Look for photos in bathroom design galleries online. Visit your local home supply store to see samples of what can be done. Take time to think through your whole project, and decide which bath accessories you will want in black, which in white.

Black and white bath accessories will lend themselves to a sleek, modern look or a quaint, colonial look. Which do you want?

Do you have black and white ceramic tile in the older 4x4" size? Do you have white wainscoting on the bottom portion of the walls? You may want to accessorize with colonial, antique items.

Do you have large, marble tiles on the floor and up the wall? Are cabinets set into the wall for a sleek look? You may want to accessorize with modern, contemporary items.

The following are a few suggestions to help you get started.

1. Vanity: Many call the vanity the focal point of the bathroom. Yours could be a sleek, modern black vanity, with a black or white vessel sink on top. Or you might go the other direction, using an antique white pedestal sink.

2. Shower and window curtains: White curtains with a black design are dramatic and add character to a bathroom. Black silhouettes of tree, leaf, or flower design are good, as are geometric black designs. Choose a design for your black and white bath accessories that carries your contemporary, antique, or other style.

3. Bath mats and rugs: Break up the color of your floor with black bath mats and rugs. Remember, when doing so, that some toiletries, such as toothpaste, may contain chlorine. A drop on a black may bleach.

4. Towels: Fluffy white towels are nice with a black or white monogram at one end. You might also combine black towels and white towels, so that each towel rack will carry the black and white theme.

5. Containers and Dispensers: Black and white bath accessories should include smaller items, too, such as wastebaskets, lotion dispensers, soap dish, toothbrush holder, and tissue box cover. You may want them in black only, white only, or a combination of the two.

Helpful Tip

Planning is essential if you want your black and white bath accessories to look good. Find a design that has everything you will need. If you choose contemporary, sleek black wire wastebasket and towel holders, you will not want to use white antique "china" containers and dispensers on your vanity.

Decorative and Functional Outdoor Floor Mats

Floor mats.Image by kakachu via Flickr

In the past outdoor mats were very plain, unattractive and mainly just functional. Today there are a multitude of designs, materials and sizes available. Outdoor mats can now be decorative and functional in many instances.

Modern technology has actually increased their ability to perform its functions. The main function of outdoor mats is to prevent the tracking of dirt and debris into indoor/other spaces. With today's manufacturing materials; the increased trapping ability of outdoor floor mats can reduce the amount of dirt that enters your door by as much as 90%.

The other main function is decorative. You can improve the curb appeal of your outdoor spaces by adding mats. You can use your outdoor mats to add accent color to your door stoop, outdoor patio, pool or business. Many floor mats come in different sizes, colors, textures, materials. Some even have geometric shapes and cut outs on them. When shopping for them remember, not all mats are created equal. Some things to look for in an floor mat are:

Durability

You want any floor mat to be durable, after all it will be exposed to the outside weather conditions. Some mats are more durable than others. Rubber (made from recycled tires) and virgin polypropylene are considered industrial quality and used in many commercial applications due to their durability. These mats are meant to handle heavy traffic and extreme temperature. Look for rubber or polypropylene outdoor floor mats that have been UV tested for sun exposure.

Drying Time

If your outdoor mat will be constantly (not just when it rains) exposed to water; then the amount of time it takes your outdoor floor mats to dry can be important to avoid mildew. Areas such as swimming polls and hot tubs require outdoor floor mats that will dry quickly. They also need to be very slip resistant. Synthetic grass or vinyl looped outdoor floor mats dry very quickly and are mildew resistant. Since the surface is textured and absorbent, they do not get slippery when wet and are ideal for safety.

Attractiveness

Some materials that these mats are made of do not offer as many design options as some of the others. Rubber and polypropylene mats generally come in a moderate array of colors but very few textures or designs on them. Outdoor mats such as those made with outdoor carpet offer the most design variety and color choices. They are not; however; as durable as rubber or polypropylene. You can get an outdoor floor mat that combines looped polypropylene carpet yarn with a rubber backing.

You get more durability and design freedom, but these outdoor floor mats take longer to dry. There are many loop style outdoor floor mats that have a lot of decorative choices. Keep the above considerations in mind when you are choosing the right outdoor floor mat to fit, function and decorate your outside space.
